Description
Former NATO Special Forces Colonel Don McDougal and RCMP constable Sherry Trottier meet in Ottawa to prepare for a specific dangerous mission. McDougal is commander of an international insurgent strike force accepting contracts most countries will not allow their own military to carry out. Whether attacking villages supporting terrorists, assassinating political figures, or destroying national opposition McDougal's Marauders together with similar insurgency groups from France, Germany, and Russia disregard laws regulating warfare conduct including Geneva Convention protocol.
McDougal accepts a contract from Al Qaeda to dispose of an Afghan warlord contravening Al Qaeda insurgency rules. Muhammad El Sjad is privately exporting drugs grown in mountain villages through a Russian connection in contravention of the terrorist organization funding rules. The mission requires a combat qualified woman to act as the McDougal's wife for gaining village access in the Kush Mountains of the Afghanistan/Pakistan border region. An exhaustive search of international police and military personnel files results in McDougal choosing former nurse and police officer Sherry Trottier as the ideal candidate. The pair gain international authorities approval to travel as members of a charitable organization funding agricultural projects feeding people in remote villages. To assure Al Qaeda and Taliban researchers accept the validity of the couple travelling as a married couple Sherry suggests a short-term marriage arrangement with a foolproof back dated wedding certificate followed by an annulment after the completing the mission. The situation leads to romance both parties find appealing but in the beginning are reluctant to accept as anything other than part of the mission. The prohibitive romance eventually becomes a major factor in personal relationships and the lives of their adult children.
McDougal must confer with European allies when the mission appears compromised by a confrontation with a Taliban patrol in Pakistan allowing Sherry Trottier to report assignment progress at RCMP headquarters in Regina. A breach of mission confidentiality surfaces from within intelligence ranks while Sherry and McDougall are on the hiatus. Military intelligence assigns Trottier's recently graduated military officer son as liaison officer with McDougal's Marauders to investigate sources endangering the mission. The liaison officer role includes involvement in the planned attack while offering NATO the opportunity to terminate the Marauder role as an illegal freelance strike force.
An incident during the attack on Warlord El Sjad's mountain village places the entire operation in extreme jeopardy leading to an unexpected outcome.
